Amsterdam
Amsterdam has over a million inhabitants in its urban area, and is situated in the Province of North-Holland. It, however, is often mistaken for the Netherlands's official seat of government (The Hague), however it is the biggest city and the cultural and creative centre of the Netherlands. It is also the country's Financial Headquarters, with many of the world's leading companies based there (e.g. Phillips). In fact, the Amsterdam Stock Exchange is the oldest Stock Exchange in the world.
The name 'Amsterdam' was formed from the term 'Amstellerdam' indicative of the city's origin: a dam in the river Amstel. Originally formed as a small fishing village in the 12th century, Amsterdam became one of the most important ports in the world during the Dutch Golden Age. During that time, the city was the leading centre for finance and diamonds. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the city expanded, and many new neighbourhoods and suburbs were formed.
Just under 4 million people visit Amsterdam annually, making it one of Europe's leading City Break destinations due to its unique charm, intense cultural dimension and world famous visitor attractions. Amsterdam provides the visitor with a unique insight into Dutch life, and with the majority of the population fluent in English, it is an extremely visitor friendly location.
